The House of Hazel is very special to me. It symbolises everything that is warm, nurturing, adventurous and fun, deeply immersed with unconditional love. It was a place that was very fulfilling as a young girl growing up. After traveling the world as DJ Disko Diva, an international touring DJ after an early career as a Chartered Accountant in Auckland graduating with first class honours from Waikato University & Professional Accounting School, it was 2018 I returned to NZ. At this time The House of Hazel was born; all starting in Matamata, and only a short drive down the road to the lush green pastures and iconic rolling hills synonymous with the Waikato and in particular, the prominent thoroughbred and dairy industries. Host to infamous hiking trails, waterfalls, cycle ways and natural springs The House of Hazel does not cease to fulfil both short and long stays. The Waikato, not only home to farm life but sitting only 5 short minutes from HOH is The Hobbiton Movie Set Tours one of NZ's most popular tourist attractions offering not only movie set tours but a wide range of Evening Banquets, Mid Winter Feasts, Second Breakfasts, but even a Hobbit Marathon & of course International Hobbit Day celebrations. In our family since the early 1960’s, the property was my paternal Grandparents, a beautiful loving home filled with gardens of home grown fruits and vegetables and home baking bursting from the tins. The small store at the corner of the road was a Four Square owned by my grandfather George “Geo” Robinson, avid golfer, connoisseur of gin and Nana’s shortbread. My Nana Marion Hazel Robinson (nee MacKinnon) was patient and kind, filling so many of my childhood memories; she was my oldest teacher. Nana embodied all the qualities of a great mentor; she was wise, forward thinking, slow to speak and quick to listen. She was a woman who showed a bold and unique attitude towards life and I as a little girl was glued to her side. She was always warm and welcoming, which is exactly how we want you to experience to The House of Hazel! The original HOH site with The Homestead, The Boudoir and Chalet’s Frodo & Gandalf looks very different from the place I grew up in I know Nana would be all in favour of the changes we've made and for this reason I decided to pay homage to her, the marvellous lady she was and name it after her. She would love how many people are able to stop in on their way through Matamata, enjoy her beloved birds of course enjoy The House of Hazel.
